HHA FRANTIC VS HQ @ Brixton Academy Saturday 25th February 2006
We love Brixton Academy! Hard House Academy is the Daddy! Big DJ’s, Big Venue and BIG BIG clubbers – WE LOVE IT!
With Frantic only holding 6 main events this year, missing any one of them would be a sin. This Saturday the organisers joined forces with Holland’s own event organisers, HQ to put on a party that would see us out of February in style. In short the line up combined hard house, funky house, hard style and more, with dj’s such as Andy Whitby, Cally and Juice, Proteus, Cally Gage and Rob Tissera all gracing the decks.

Arriving early for an event such as this is always a good idea, particularly when there are 4,499 other clubbers coming too. The club may be a little reluctant to let you in first if they have no one to man their doors(!!), but standing out in the cold always make the night seem that little bit more worth it once you are inside! For those of you reading this who have not yet experienced a night out at this venue, I suggest you add it to the top of your list of clubs to visit. It is simply amazing and once inside you will realise why.
The main arena with sloping dancefloor is immense, boasting one of the biggest spaces for clubbers to dance in, in London. If you come in the side entrance, the main arena is the first room you will see, the stage will be to your right and believe me you will be impressed at its size. Rows and rows of lighting rigs tower over the stage and the various Dj set ups are scattered neatly around the open space. As we entered this arena tonight, new up and coming Dj/producer, Greg Brookman was playing his “Alive” set to the early arrivals. Greg is one of the biggest, brightest and boldest producers that the Hard Dance scene possesses at the moment and partnered with his guest scratching buddy Craig, he played an interesting and lively warm up set, dropping new tunes such as his own collaboration “Panzan”
For me, the way to enter this club in true style is not through the side door, but instead by via main front entrance. Again for those novices out there who have not set foot into this venue, entering through the main door is a must! Walking in this way, you feel as if you are walking into a millionaire’s mansion. The marble floor and high ceiling of the opening hall is impressive and you feel as if you are making a grand entrance into the building. Sweeping staircases each side of the foyer lead your eyes up stairs, but the real focal point of this area is the Dj booth. This modest Dj set up, with large speakers and cute lighting is inviting. This is a unique room that at the start of the night tonight was playing host to Andy Rise and Paul Divine. This back to back duo were serenading the clubbers in true hard bounce style, starting most clubbers night off with a gentle kick!
Brixton Academy is a maze of rooms and corridors, and the next place to explore by adventurous clubbers is the balcony bar. This room is cleverly hidden and for those who stumble across it will feel a sense of exclusivity and excitement. Located to the right of the Foyer, this almost secret den is accessed by thin winding staircases, which actually give you a chance to breathe for they are always fresh feeling. The balcony bar tonight was being hosted by Oblivion Records, who had laid out a smart line up including Wid & Ben, and Wales’ very own Miss Frisky. Wid and Ben played a quality hard dance set, and whilst smiling away throughout, they treated the crowd with their very latest remix of The Thrillseekers “Synthasasia” – well done boys, we like this a lot!
To finish my brief tour of this mammoth club I will take you upstairs to the balcony. This is by far the second best place to go to in this club (the first of course being the font of the dance floor!). Words to describe this area include high, spacious and social. Empty at the start of the night, by midnight this large seating area will be completely buzzing with clubbers dancing, sitting, chatting and more. Frantic spend thousands on their light shows and tonight was no exception as they and HQ had teamed up with lighting experts “Halo” to bring one of the best ever lighting displays in the UK. This included an incredibly powerful laser, that in order to fully appreciate the extent of you needed to go and take a seat on the balcony. When sat up high the lights blow you away, and partnered with the cracking tunes of some of clublands best dj’s, this is one seat you do not want to let go!
This club is the perfect setting for a immense party. If you have not been, I hope this review has made you want to taste the delights it has on offer. For those who did join me tonight, to enjoy the full on clubbing experience, I’m sure you will all agree that it could not have been missed. To finish my review I shall provide you with my count down of the top 5 highlights of the night:
- Kutski played his first ever back to back with The Organ Donors, and they all opened the set with an explosive scratch off. This was a display of pure talent that was being enjoyed by everyone in the main room, including the super star dj’s themselves!
- Cally Gage grinning gorgeously away as she engaged the crowd with a classic set in the Foyer, showing off her fantastic new slip mats
- Steve Hill vs. JP, playing in the main room. This unusual back to back combination of dj’s worked superbly, and JP really showed Steve how hard style should be played as he dropped Zero Visions “Overdrive” early on in the set. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this hard style tune, I suggest you purchase a copy now, as it is banging and it completely blew the roof off, of Brixton Academy off tonight!
- Lisa Pin Up’s personalised intro impressed the main room crowd and as she proceeded to play a full on classic freedom set that included JDS “Nine Ways” she reminded us all of why she simply is the Queen of hard house.
- Two words: Andy Whitby! His set was by far the set of the night and takes top spot of my highlights. Andy never fails to provide a unique, energetic, mind blowing set and tonight was no exception, it was simply amazing. The whole crowd in the main room were going crazy to every single tune, stomping away to hard happy tunes including Ratty “sunrise” and his own tune of the night “Blacker than black” Andy quotes: “Kicked right off as well, so we'll have that as tune of the set!”

Vicious Vs Hussle @ The Music Box, Manchester 10 th February 2006
Only two weeks prior to this event we were making the same journey up the motorway to Manchester and here we are again heading back for another dose, this time from the mighty Vicious Circle! After four hours of motorway madness and with very numb bums, we finally hit the city. The event was taking place at The Music Box, an unknown venue to me and trying to find venues you've never been to before is always a bit of a nightmare, especially when you're itching to get out of the car! But thanks to the trusty sat nav we found it with ease! The club was a very discreet looking from the outside, you would never have guessed it was a club, but upon stepping down the stairs you definetly got that underground vibe - perfect for filthy hard house nights! The VC decor, banners and inflatables set the scene just so ....

We arrived pretty late and had already missed Tim Clewz (the man of all things funky!) who had warmed things up for the crowd and by now it was well into the second set of the night from Mr Vicious Circle himself - Paul Glazby. We ditched our jackets and headed straight for the bar for the first vodka of the night! Drink in hand, it was time to soak up the atmosphere and make our hello's to all the familiar faces. Firstly the gorgeous Kate Hammond who was looking beautiful as ever, all the VC board members (whom were out in full force!), Barry from Goodgreef who had popped in to show his support, fellow DJs, producers, promoters and lots of new faces were all out to play. The party was buzzing with an electric happy vibe, smiles allround and naughty grins too from those getting well into the dirty tunes! Cameras were flashing everywhere, this was certainly a night each and everyone wanted to treasure.
Back to the music, Paul Glazby was laying down the beats in true Glazby form. He had the place shaken to its core, the clubbers lapping up every second of his filthy hard tunes and the seamless mixing. Taking over the decks from Paul was the special guest of the night, Superfast Oz. Armed with a bag of new and upfront tackle, Oz took to the decks and delivered an awesome two hour set. Bang on form he took the crowd through groovy hard house, including the new O.D404 track 'Compremised', to techy and meoldic and dirty hard, all with the precision cutting and chopping we've come to expect from the hard house legend. As Oz took over I hit the crowd and caught up on the gossip in clubland, but not for long! A couple of drinks later we were back on the dancefloor busting out some shapes to his set, everyone was loving it. The two hours flew by and it was time for Ben Stevens to hit the decks, now we were in for a treat! Wonder boy Stevens has always been a favourite DJ of mine, showing the world what young DJs are made of with his sublime mixing skills. I hadn't heard him play for a good few months and was looking forward to hearing him again. True to form Ben supplied the goods, despite his set being cut short .. booo! Albeit a bit hazy from those pesky vodkas, Ben fired out a devastating set filled with loads of Vicious Circle tunes - just the way it should be at a VC event!!! The night was over before I knew it and it was time to head home, another four (plus!!!) hours of bum numbing fun ... ouch ... definitely worth it and more to the point definitely The Year Of The Saw!

Contagious @ The Brunel Rooms, Swindon 11 th November 2005
As a DJ on the hard dance scene you get to play at all sorts of events, from the small back rooms to the big multiroom events – it's far less frequent and much more exciting though when you have the opportunity to be at the start of something totally new. This is exactly what happened last weekend when I made the trip down to the launch of Contagious at Swindon's Brunel Rooms.
After a high speed and at times hair-raising drive down from Milton Keynes, me, my driver Iain, his girlfriend Rachel and my good mate and club visual genius Tim got into the club at about 10:15, in time for Mark Austin's driving tech trance and trance set. Mark certainly seemed to be doing the business, his tough, grooving trance sounds dragging the rapidly-growing crowd onto the dance floor. While Mark was doing his thing, I had chance to hook up with Hannah Wild, the headliner of the night Phil Reynolds and my back 2 back partner for the night, WiLDCHiLD's James Condon.

Come 11, it was time for James and myself to take to the decks – we knew exactly what we wanted to do with our set, given James' tough bouncy sound and my pumping hard trance style. We kicked off with a cheeky Olive/Lightforce bootleg, before letting rip for the next hour, working together to get the very most out of the well up-for-it crowd who seemed to have an unhealthy amount of energy!!
Next up was my long time idol and headliner for the night, the legendary Phil Reynolds. I'd been looking forward to hearing his set for weeks and the man didn't disappoint. From his well renowned flawless mixing and awesome tune selection to his great crowd interaction, Phil showed right from the off exactly why he is held in such high regard by both clubbers and DJs alike. For someone who has been at the forefront of the hard dance scene and shaped the sound as we know it, he still clearly has so much love and energy for it – a great thing to see. And just as we thought his set couldn't get any better, he pulled out what for me (and plenty of others by the looks of the reaction) was tune of the night – a tearing hard trance bootleg of Shakedown's “At Night”. True mastery of the scene he has influenced so greatly.
Phil was always going to be a hard act to follow, but Caroline Banx certainly showed she could come up with the goods – it's been a long time since I last played out with her and I for one was really excited about her new psy trance sound. The whole psy thing has been a major influence on the scene this year and I wanted to catch her take on it. Caroline has shaped her psy trance sound to combine the driving “live” instrumentation of the likes of Astrix's tracks with more traditional hard trance riffs – she sure as hell rocked it, given the reaction of the crowd and the fact that all the night's DJs were on the floor too – a rare sight!
Caroline gave way to the hostess with the mostess, Hannah Wild, who utterly devastated her home crowd with a thunderous hard house set that took in a broad spectrum of influences, from techy, through driving right up to total filth – quality!! Hannah's really made a name for herself over the last 18 months and the lady certainly showed us why with her tight mixing, fierce riffs and tough basslines – it's been a good while since I have really enjoyed a hard house set as much as this and I would say that the Contagious crowd certainly seemed to agree, going absolutely nuts!
The last DJ of the night was Vicious Circle's Frank Farrell, who carried on from Hannah in his own inimitable hard-as-nails style. On a 1 to 10 on the hardness scale, Frank's sound is undoubtedly a Spinal Tap-style 11!! Snarling, sharp hoovers and lead lines, gritty basslines and sharp, hard percussion define Frank's sound, and coupled with his smooth, flowing mixes, the set was always going to rock the crowd! Right to the end of the night, Frank kept the crowd rocking – pure class!
No night is complete with just a great DJ lineup – Contagious really does have the full package with the gorgeous Contagious Clubwear girls dancing on stage, really nice flowing white drapes and décor and the Brunel Rooms' well known sound system. But all this would count for nothing if it wasn't for a great crowd who really do know how to party hard, appreciate their music and most of all really love what is clearly a new and growing scene. I had heard that the South West club scene was going through something of a renaissance – Contagious proved this exactly right! I for one can't wait to get down for the next event on the 2nd of December with Gatecrasher's Matt Hardwick – see you all there!

Crasher Classics Tour @ The Brunel Rooms, Swindon 7 th October 2005
On Friday 7 th October the mighty Crasher hit the heart of Wiltshire at its finest club, the legendary Brunel Rooms. The Brunel Rooms is the true super-club of the South West, world famous for its revolving bar! No stranger to the large trance and hard house promotions, it was once home to Sundissential, Godskitchen and Serious, events that have a special place in many clubbers hearts, for they flocked in their thousands to party at the Rooms, coming from as far a field as Newcastle to dance the night away.
Now in 2005 with Crasher hitting the club, sparks fly as the place lights up very much like the ‘old days'.

The doors opened at ten and within minutes the club was filling up, rolling to the sounds of Jamesy (Brunelrooms) back to back Mark Austin (Sundissential). I popped down to the front door to be fronted with a massive queue, the first queue I have witnessed at our trance and hard house nights since the last Serious event some four years ago. I had to do a double take as I couldn't believe my eyes, had we finally put Swindon back on the map for hard dance? By just eleven thirty the club was packed out in both rooms, with trance classics firing out from the boys in the main room and chunky n funky house classics coming from the boys in the Amphi. Old faces and new, they were all here tonight … had anyone missed this reunion AND new beginning?!
The main room was decked out in full Crasher décor, the famous lion shining behind the decks, the inflatable lion and stars covering the stage, the sparkling lions floating above, the club looked fantastic. Topped off with the gorgeous Contagious Dancers working their magic on stage, the venue looked back on form! There was definitely some magic in the air tonight, the whole place was electric, rocking from the word go and more smiles than I've seen in a club in a very long time.
Crashers very own Riley and Durrant hit the wheels of steel at midnight and I can safely say they absolutely took the roof off! Everyone's hands were up in the air, soaking up every single second of their set. Big tune after big tune, the crowd didn't get a chance to rest and the two hours that they played flew by. BS2 (Scream) followed and rocked the punters into a frenzy the only way they know how, a tough set to follow for Cardiff's Stu Grady. None the less he didn't fail to deliver, now coming up to 4am he held the dance floor to its capacity and pushed them to the very limits.
In amongst mingling with the crowd, photos and a few cheeky vodkas, I managed to grab some time to nip downstairs to check out Lee Jays house set. I found myself a spot on the dance floor and grooved away to the awesome chunky beats he was hammering out! The night flew by and before I knew it, it was time to play. It was now 4am and time for the very last set of the night, I wound Stu's last track down …. And silence! “Come on then Brunel Rooms, give it up for the very last hour!” Myself and James Condon (Wildchild) took things a up a notch with some driving hard trance numbers but it wasn't long before the night came to an end. But not before releasing my one more in true Crasher Classics style, Tiesto – Suburban Train! Those hands went up in the air for one last time, a perfect ending to a fantastic night!
“Crasher at the Brunel Rooms was an awesome night, the crowd were electric and all up for it, knowing all the tunes! Reminded me off the clubs atmosphere a few years ago.” Jamesy
“Amazing, just like the old times! Loved the music and loved the people, fucking have it!” Hayley - Dancer
“The Crasher Classics Tour was a wicked night, the venue was buzzing and the crowd were loving it big time. A proper good night!” James Condon
“I was really impressed by the club and the crowd, they were awesome and well up for it! Thought everyone played an excellent selection of classics and there was a good progression of music through the night! Really enjoyed my set and the reaction I had, can't wait to do it all again if I get the chance! Crasher Classics was awesome” Stu Grady
“Crasher had a immense and solid atmosphere from the minute the doors, which didn't stop all night! The dance floor continued to get fuller and fuller!” Frank - clubber
So Swindon does still rock and the Brunel Rooms is going back on the map for hard dance! Our next event is Contagious on 11 th November with the master of hard trance, Phil Reynolds. Future events include guests such as Matt Hardwick for those Crasher fans that made this night so successful and hey there may even be another Crasher in Swindon, so keep your eyes peeled and your hands up in the air! A big thank you to everyone who came from The Brunel Rooms, Contagious and Hannah Wild.

Frantic presents Hard House Heaven @ Heaven, London 29th May 2005
The bank holiday weekend has landed and in true tradition I throw on my glad rags and make my way to a hot lively club. This weekend it is time for me to venture into the deep depths of central London , to a club located not far from the holy one! Heaven has opened its doors to one and all and it seems even the sinners want to take advantage of this chance, taking every opportunity to push the party beyond the weekend. With 5 rooms, cutting edge lights and lasers, live vdj sets and of course hundreds of other clubbers, this is a club that promises to make my weekend go with a bang!
|
|
|
| |
|
|
Excitedly I enter the club, which is situated under the arches of central London . This secluded entry is hard to spot at first and it is only with the help of the glow stick seller that I am guided into the right direction! Once in, the low ceilings and darkened corners merge to create a mysterious feel to the surroundings, which I soak up in ore. Hundreds of party people all raring to go are already exploring this haven of rooms and corridors, and I find myself eager to join in. To my right, a glow of purple and green light shines through the arches, enticing me on the main dance floor. This display of colour is intense and partnered with the pounding sound of JP and Jukesy back to back with Daley I truly feel like I am in paradise. Stomping away in the corner is a bunch of hardcore folk, who are starting their night as they mean to go on. Dressed in brightly coloured attire with war paint and fluffies to match, these energized bunnies are certainly hammering the dancefloor hard – and so they should be!
After a brief stomping session, I decide to continue my exploration of this maze of rooms. I step off of the dancefloor and take an immediate left up the stairs into the bounce room. This crazy room is in full swing, and the atmosphere is full of beans already! There are no stompers in site - this dancefloor is for bouncing only and boy are the crowd giving it some, dancing to up and coming Dj Paul Divine back to back with Danny Luu. Filling the DJ box with their bounding personalities and daring tunes this pair are certainly setting the tone for the night, and dropping his new bootleg “Till the Bass keeps Pumpin” Paul proves that not only is he Divine by name, he is Divine by nature!
The Podiums are full to the brim with clubbers all fighting for that front spot and as I enthusiastically leap onto the dance floor I notice the green lasers are also whooshing around the room in unison. This is an exhilarating atmosphere and I am ecstatic to be in the midst of it all, despite the immense heat now being generated. Paul Divine continues his hyper set with Voodoo Peoples “Lover”, causing me to almost burst with excitement as I sing along in true karaoke style!
Rachel Auburn takes her turn on the decks and cranks up the tempo in true tidy girl style. Starting her set with her very own original “Bass Keeps Pumping” the warm crowd respond in an electrifying frenzy. This classic floor filler hits the spot for the bikini wearing cyber girls in the front row, and toned men on the podium and they all rave madly. Continuing her set with ease, Rachel plays a multitude of old-school classic happy house tunes, and leads the way nicely for club lands newest hero: Andy Whitby back to back with the Queen of bounce Lisa Pin-up.
This is the set of all sets that I have been waiting for and as the room starts to double in volume, it seems that everyone else has also been anticipating this great performance from the two legends too. Whitby opens the set with the original of The Prodigy's Outta space chopped with 'faith' by Rachel Auburn , causing Pin-Up to respond with a slightly harder themed style, dropping Tidy's “Your Ass is Mine” by Sebanelli and Oddbod. Their set continues to blow me away and at the end I ask Andy Whitby to reflect on the night, he quotes:
“Wow, what a night! The atmosphere, the crowd, the lighting, the sound....it was all perfect, couldn't have asked for more. Tune of my back2back with Pin-Up had to be Neon Lights - 'Not Alone' (Andy Whitby remix)....i might be biased but it certainly seemed to hit the spot, crank it up!!"
Reflecting back on my night, I smile with glee at the highlights: Paul Divines new bootleg, the darkened corners of the mysterious club its pure ability to get you lost! And finally, my personnel top moment, Pin Up and Andy Whitby's back to back. As usual I have celebrated my bank holiday in style and leave with fond memories of my visit in heaven.

Bedlam's 2nd Birthday @ Factory, Vauxhall 30th April 2005
So here we are, its April 30 th 2005 and its time to celebrate Bedlam's two years of mayhem in The Big Smoke!
From humble beginnings at Club 414 through to all out monster shenanigans at Brixton's legendary Fridge, Bedlam has put on one hell of a show and stamped its unmistakeable brand of dirty hard dance upon London's club scene. Over the past two years they've rocked the dance floor with the filthiest DJs in town, ensuring nothing but the best for their devoted crowd.
|
|
|
| |
|
|
The birthday celebrations are all set to kick off, not even the confusion of the last minute venue change can put a damper on things. Originally supposed to be held at Fire Club, Bedlam had to be relocated round the corner at the very plush Factory (formerly Club Supreme), sharing the venue with a new night called Colours. Roobarb and their crew were down in force to help shake things up. Colours took on the main room, whilst Bedlam and Roobarb shook up room two.
We arrived at eleven to find the club packed out and already going right off! Any worries of the venue change soon went out the window, you had to fight for your spot on that dance floor! You could sense a real ‘party' atmosphere right from the word go, smiles all round – get in! The music kicked off bang on, nice and techy – the way it should be at the start of a good night! Its all about musical progression!
I missed the first few DJs (sorry guys!) and Lee Osborne was the first I caught, showcasing us with all the tech trance he's been busy making in the past couple of months, the crowd were loving it! It set us grooving nicely along, good skills Leezo! Dynamic Intervention fired things up playing hard as you like house, banging out all of his infamous dirty bass lines, twisted riffs and sounds. The Roobarb DJs were pure class all the way, I was extremely impressed with Dave Austin, he was spanking out proper driving, techy numbers just the way I like it … and then he went and dropped Mark Maitland's - Get Up! That's it ladies and gentlemen we have a winner, my set of the night goes to!!!!! Paul Wilkerson followed and kept things driving nicely, another great talent from the Roobarb crew!
I headed off to the main room to catch Eryk Orpheus showing Colours how it was it done Bedlam style. He absolutely smashed it, the room was rammed for him and they loved every minute of his live set! Good work Mr Orpheus! Back over in room two Bedlams own Lucy Fur and Chris Humphreys were battling it out back to back! They had the place rocking, everyone was getting right on down! The Bedlam v Bedlam Birthday set, oi oi! Roobarbs Jon Charles came on after and techno-d it right up!! Dropping that cheeky One Night in Hackney is always a winner, wahey! This young talent if one to keep your eye on in the future! Bedlam resident Dan Madams then stepped things up, playing even harder if that's possible?! Bringing us back over to the hard house side of things pure Madams style, gwarn son!
I dread to think what time it was by now but the crowd were still bubbling and getting stuck right in! I take my hat off to the Norwich crew, you guys were electric and definitely knew how to party and they fully supporting their DJs all the way! Nuff respect!!! So after an amazing night of fantastic music all the way, a truly well up for it crowd and one too many balloons of laughing gas, we wished Bedlam a happy birthday and headed off to recover! A big thank you goes out the everyone involved, all the loyal supporters, all you harder faster loonies and each and every person that came down to help celebrate in style!!! Roll on the next one, see you down the front!

Cardiff’s largest capacity dance venue proved a fitting place to host
the night’s celebrations boasting a 2000 capacity crowd with two large
air-conditioned rooms equipped with banging sound systems and
mesmerising light shows.
Highlights of the night included Lisa Lashes with her usual pulsating,
foot-stomping set, really whipping the fired-up crowd into a frenzy with
some of the finest hard house around, while in the other room Seb
Fontaine and Nick Warren set the place alight with their subtle mixture
of trance and funky house.
A capacity crowd of friendly, up for it clubbers, pleasant and helpful
club staff, excellent decor and quality DJ's and music really made
sure that this night was one not to be missed.
The Time Flies boys totally know how to throw a party and Contagious
are very much looking forward to the next event.......
